DOE Awards Calpine up to $270 Million for Baytown CCS Project
On December 14, 2023, the US Department of Energy (DOE) Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) awarded Houston CCS Alliance member Calpine up to $270 million for its Baytown CCS Project. The company?s Houston-area project was one of three across California, Texas, and North Dakota to be selected for up to $890 million in federal funding for carbon capture and storage demonstration projects.
Calpine?s Baytown CCS Project is designed to capture 95% or more of industrial CO2 emissions from turbines and auxiliary boilers at the company?s Baytown Energy Facility. As a combined heat and power generation facility, carbon capture technology at the Baytown Energy Facility will enable it to provide low-carbon industrial heat to co-located facilities and low-carbon power to the Texas grid, improving Texas? energy security while reducing the state?s carbon footprint. The project will use fellow Houston CCS Alliance member Shell?s CANSOLV solvent to capture up to 2 million metric tons of CO2 annually, which will be transported and sequestered in saline storage sites on the Gulf Coast.
Additionally, the Baytown CCS Project?is evaluating?use?of greywater cooling?to minimize freshwater consumption by reusing wastewater. According to the DOE website, ?the project has already incorporated community feedback into the project designs to reduce non-CO2 air pollutants in addition to minimizing freshwater usage.?
A leader in CCS development and implementation, Calpine has now received DOE funding for three of its major carbon capture and storage projects, including the company?s Sutter decarbonization facility in California, and its Deer Park CCS project in the Houston region.
