Calpine and US Department of Energy Advance Grant Process for Baytown CCS Project

Houston CCS Alliance companies continue to lead the way on making Houston the global leader in reducing emissions through carbon capture and storage.

On Wednesday, July 3, the US Department of Energy’s Office of Clean Energy Demonstrations (OCED) awarded $12.5 million to Houston CCS Alliance member Calpine to begin Phase 1 activities to implement their Carbon Capture and Storage Project at the Baytown Energy Center in Baytown, TX.

This project is slated to be the first full-scale implementation of CCS technology at a natural gas combined cycle power plant in the US, designed to capture at least 95% of industrial CO2 emissions. This funding is part of a larger award of up to $270 million for the project.

During Phase 1, Calpine will complete a Front-End Engineering and Design (FEED) study to determine CO2 capture, transport, and storage specifications, and will start workforce planning, project permitting, as well as complete a National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) review process.

This is the third major carbon capture and storage project for which Calpine has received awards from the Department of Energy. The company’s Sutter, California and Deer Park, Texas facilities have also received federal funding.

As a member of the Houston CCS Alliance, Calpine is committed to reducing industrial CO2 emissions in the Houston region and making the Gulf Coast a leader in the energy transition.
