Celebrating Earth Day through Community Engagement
At the Houston CCS Alliance, we understand the importance of utilizing technologies like carbon capture and storage (CCS) to improve our environment, while continuing to deliver the critical products and materials modern life relies on every day. However, we know we can’t do this alone. It takes engaging with community members and building local support to make our mission a reality.
This Earth Day, we’re looking back at some of our most impactful community events. Whether it’s a STEM event for Houston students or a roundtable with community members and local elected officials, each event gives us the opportunity to leave a lasting impression through educating on the importance of carbon capture and storage in our region.
Last fall, we had the opportunity to participate in UH’s STEM Day for local Third Ward students. With the help of our member company, Chevron, we were able to explain to elementary and middle school students how carbon capture and storage works, and how a career in a STEM field could prepare them to work in the low-carbon space.
At roundtables in communities like Pasadena, Baytown, and others, we explained the benefits of carbon capture and storage technology in an open dialogue. After our presentations, we fielded questions from attendees, with subject matter experts on hand to outline the safety of CCS and the standards to which all projects must adhere.
At our Tree Planting and Park Improvement Day, we made a direct impact on our environment through the efforts of more than 50 volunteers. We rolled up our sleeves alongside Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia and planted over 400 trees at Partnership Park in Pasadena, beautifying a tornado-ravaged community.
Following the tree planting event, in early January, Commissioner Garcia presented the Houston CCS Alliance with an award for our outstanding community service. We’re proud to receive this distinction and are excited to continue our efforts to improve our local communities both through our volunteering and advocacy efforts.
As we look ahead to the rest of 2024, our goals remain unchanged. We are steadfastly committed to expanding the presence of carbon capture and storage in the Houston area and look forward to building upon relationships new and old, continuing to spread awareness about the importance of CCS and the positive impact it will have on Houston and the world.
Happy Earth Day!
